The centre-back played nearly 350 games in 13 years as a professional, but was forced to retire in 2005, at just 30, after complaining of dizzy spells and headaches.

Richards started his career in his home town of Bradford, before earning a £1.85 million move to Wolves in 1995.
He moved to Premier League Southampton in 1999, and two years later followed manager Glenn Hoddle to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £8.1 million.

A statement on the Wolves website said the club would pay tribute to Richards in the matchday programme for the game with Spurs next Sunday.
