Subway has overtaken McDonald's to officially become the world's largest restaurant chain, a spokesperson for the sandwich company has revealed.
According to Les Winograd, Subway had 33,749 restaurants open worldwide at the end of 2010, compared to the 32,737 McDonald’s.
'We overcame them at some point in 2010. One year ago, we were slightly behind,' Winograd said.
‘Last year was actually pretty average for us, growth-wise. We aim to open between 1,000 and 2,000 locations globally each year.’
The privately-owned company, which was established in 1965 and has restaurants in 95 countries, claims it’s on a ‘great run’ and plans to build on the success of recent years.
McDonald’s, for its part, has stated it is now focused on ‘being better, not just bigger’.
Spokeswoman Heidi Barker said: ‘We remain focused on listening to and serving our customers, and are committed to being better, not just bigger.’
Subway has defended its decision to remain a private company, with Winograd adding: ‘That is our choice, and the reason for that is that it enables us to focus on the product, the quality, the restaurants and not on the other things associated with a public company, like financial statements.’
